The streambed may give evidence of stream-quality conditions and origins.
For example, gray sediment may indicate passage through shale strata and red sediment the influence of sandstone.
Filamentous algae likely results from nutrients entering the stream due to runoff from grazing.
The streambed may be modified by scouring from high flows and as a result of the occasional arrival of nutrients and a stream's seasonal response to them.
Views of streambed conditions are shown during low flows and with algae coverings.
